One of the most common service calls I receive starts with the same sentence:
"My internet is really slow."
Most people immediately assume their internet provider is the problem.
But after testing their connection, I often find something surprising...
The internet coming into the home is working exactly as it should.
The real problem is the Wi-Fi network inside the house.
Before you spend more money upgrading your internet plan, it's worth understanding what might actually be slowing you down.
Internet vs. Wi-Fi
Although people often use the terms interchangeably, they aren't the same thing.
Your internet is the connection your Internet Service Provider (ISP) delivers to your home.
Your Wi-Fi is the wireless network that distributes that internet connection to your phones, computers, TVs, tablets, and smart home devices.
You can have a blazing-fast internet connection and still experience slow performance if your Wi-Fi isn't delivering that speed throughout your home.
1. Poor Router Placement
Location matters far more than most people realize.
Some of the worst places to put a router include:
Inside a closet
Behind a television
In a cabinet
On the floor
In a far corner of the house
For the best coverage, place your router as close to the center of your home as possible and elevate it off the floor whenever practical.
2. Walls and Building Materials
Not everything lets Wi-Fi pass through easily.
Some common signal blockers include:

Concrete
Stone fireplaces
Metal framing
Mirrors
Large appliances
Sometimes moving a router just a few feet can noticeably improve signal strength throughout the home.
3. Wireless Interference
Your Wi-Fi shares the airwaves with many other devices.

Too much interference can make your connection feel slow even though your internet service is working perfectly.
4. One Router Isn't Always Enough

Many people never think about their router once it's installed.
Like your phone or computer, routers receive firmware updates that improve:

Some manufacturers are also notorious for performance degrading over time until firmware updates are installed. Regular updates and the occasional reboot can often resolve mysterious slowdowns.
