When a computer freezes, the cause is usually not obvious from the frozen screen alone. The practical way to troubleshoot it is to identify a repeatable pattern, check which resources are under pressure, and change one variable at a time. That process helps separate an isolated app problem from a system-wide software, storage, peripheral, heat, or hardware issue.

If your computer keeps freezing, start by noting what you were doing immediately before each freeze. Then check CPU, memory, and disk activity in Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on Mac. First determine what “freezing” means
Different symptoms point toward different parts of the system. Ask these questions before changing anything:

• Does the problem happen during one task, such as a video call, game, large download, or file export?

What should you do during a freeze?

Mac users can open the Force Quit window with Option + Command + Escape. Force quitting can lose unsaved work in that application, so use it only when a normal quit is not available.

Build a simple freeze log

• Application or task in use

• Any warning or error message

Do not end unfamiliar system processes simply because they use resources. Record the process name, close ordinary applications you recognize, and investigate before disabling system components.
Check available storage
Very low storage can contribute to poor performance and update problems. In Windows, review Settings > System > Storage. On Mac, review System Settings > General > Storage. Remove or move files only after confirming what they are, and emptying a recycle or trash folder only when you are certain its contents are no longer needed.
